Media Magazine Conference Trip

On Friday 13th December myself and my group went to a media magazine conference where different people spoke to us about what they do this included:
- A Brunel university researcher (Dr. Laura Harvey)
- The producer and director of the documentary 'Educating Yorkshire' (David Brindley)
- A Loughborough professor of Media&Communication (David Buckingham)
- Director of Strays (Robert Mckillop)
- Producer of In Our Name (Michelle Eastwood)

I found  David Brindley's talk the most interesting and helpful as he explained the possible problems with doing a documentaries in a busy setting like a public school where many things are occurring at one time. He explained how they had many cameras set up around the school but only 3 camera could record what is happening at one time.

David Brindley showing us a picture of the room where people from his team watched the
live feed from the school and chose the most interesting scenes to show on TV

How Video Games Changed The World Documentary

Title screen for the Charlie Brooker's Documentary

While going through my 4oD app I found this documentary by Charlie Brooker about video games. This documentary will be useful to myself and my group as we can reinforce similar forms and conventions used, also we could use some of its contents to put into our script.
Here are a few screengrabs from the documentary:

In this documentary, Charlie Brooker focused on 10 games, each game was introduced with a voiceover that stated
the name of the game,  it's release year and maker (like above)

Throughout this documentary, various people were interviewed. These people were
interviewed in a natural indoor setting and a white caption was used to
state their name and role/job

Here is the advert for the documentary:

Here are different video game genres, this is what we would use as episode titles

Exploration of different documentary titles

Self Assessment Of Assignment 21

a.    Is there a clear episode title which relates to overall question?
       Yes

b.    Are there 3 clear subtitles which relate to the overall title?
No, as two of the subtitles (evolution of video games graphics and evolution of interactive video game consoles) are quite similar

c.    What is the quality of detail for each subtopic?
There needs to be more in depth detail for each subtopic by having clear bullet points that explain the content of the episode and focusing on the conventions that I would apply and how it would help to inform the target audience about the topic

d.    Will your audience enjoy this episode, and each subtopic? Will it be interesting for the whole 60 mins?
My episode has the potential to be enjoyable if I move away from cliche information

e.    Is the content fresh, engaging, original……will the audience actually LEARN and THINK about this topic?
Some of my content is original however, majority of it includes information that my audience may already know. Once I include more engaging and original content my episode will not only educate my target audience but allow them to think about the topic and develop opinions based on what they watched.

f.     Have pro’s/con’s or advantages/disadvantages been considered?
Yes, there is a debate and an exploration of both sides to the episode title

g.    Is there a range of conventions applied to make it a ‘documentary’ or are they quite basic/straight forward conventions?
There is a range of conventions applied but I need to include statistics and more expert interviews to support my subtopics

h.    How inventive and original are the applications for conventions?
The application of the conventions in my episode is quite original as I have developed conventions to make my episode more engaging but I need to explore more conventions that can be applied

i.     Overall what level is the planning for episode?
       2B

Catfish The TV Show: Season 2 - Episode 7

In this episode, I recognised different documentary conventions and forms from the usual ones that are used in Catfish episodes. For example use of time manipulation to speed up the pace of something

Some conventions and forms in this episode:
Voice over
Archival photos
Close up shots
Cutaways
Titles & credits
Fast forward editing

In this scene, fast forward editing is used on a calendar to emphasis how time has passed
Interviews are conducted in a natural environment to maintain realism

Titles are also used in interviews to introduce the person and their role/relation another person (Mike)

A steady, close up shot is used here so that the audience can read what is on the phone screen
Focus pull is used  in this shot as the background of the phone screen is blurred while the words in the front are not

Rely Questions on Peer's Topic

Today, in lesson we did 'rely questions' to give audience feedback to our peers.

This was useful because:
-gave my group more ideas of what exactly to include in our documentary
-it made me think about the possible questions I could ask about my topic in public interviews
-made me realise that if a topic is not explained properly it will be hard to know what to include

Media Magazine Article #1 ' Technology & Creativity; Curse Or Cure?' (Sept 2010)

For homework, I read an article titled 'technology & creative, curse or cure' by Elinor Block and Peter Block in the September 2010 issue

'Technology & Creativity, Curse or Cure' article, September 2010 issue (1/4)

'Technology & Creativity, Curse or Cure' article, September 2010 issue (2/4)

'Technology & Creativity, Curse or Cure' article, September 2010 issue (3/4)

'Technology & Creativity, Curse or Cure' article, September 2010 issue (4/4)

In reading this article I learned/found interesting the following things:

  • It explores how new technologies in today's society can be both good and bad
  • This articles teaches the reader how new technologies such as equipment used to make 'Avatar' film raises questions such as "is the actor's work more technical than talent?"
  • reason 3
  • I learned how social networking sites such as Twitter are huge marketing tools in today's society
  • I found it interesting that new technology goes through a business consulting organisation called 'Gartner' before early adopters can buy these products
  • I could compare this to how technology is advancing and how people have more variety of technologies to chose from to fit their lifestyle
